The Swiftwater Touring kayak is designed exclusively for paddling long distances on fast moving rivers with lots of swirling currents and small rapids that would catch the ends of a normal sea kayak and require constant exhausting corrective strokes. It is much faster than existing crossover kayaks, although a bit slower than our sea kayak designs. It’s also designed to carry a heavy load for weeklong camping trips without raft support. It is highly maneuverable and does not have any natural directional stability. This means that just like any whitewater boat, as soon as you stop paddling it will veer off and spin in a circle.

This would be a fantastic choice for a competent paddler with a solid roll to use on an early spring self-support trip on a high water river with a lot of class I and some class II rapids without a lot of pin potential.

However, it’s not a great choice for mostly flatwater paddling or ocean paddling. For example, on a trip with 90% flatwater and just a few small rapids it’s usually better to bring a normal sea kayak.
