I built this kayak 2 years ago for myself. The boat is typical of the few collected samples from the Aleutian chain in the 1800’s. Kayaks like this would have been used to hunt seals, walrus, halibut, and whales. Construction is of red cedar, ash, and cold bent willow shoots. The framework is exotic and complex, filled with flexible joints. These joints proved useful when the kayak flew off the roof of my car with the canopy still attached! I looked back to see canopy shattered on the freeway. The kayak suffered minor skin damage and no damage to the frame. I later removed the skin and hung the kayak in the shop. The kayak paddled well the few times I used it, I just moved on to other things.
