Video: East Greenland Kayak Build, Day 4. Installing the deck stringers and cleaning up the frame

East Greenland Kayak Build, Day 4. Installing the deck stringers and cleaning up the frame. (There’s music)
.
The foredeck of an East Greenland kayak has a distinctive humped shape in the foot area. Because these kayaks were extremely shallow (typically around 5 1/2 inches) it seems likely that this hump was there to create more foot room, although I haven’t seen explained explained anywhere.
.
The 3 wide, flat, foredeck stringers are unique to East Greenland kayaks as well. I make these out of flatsawn ash and peg them to the Masik and the curved deck beam ahead of it. Traditionally these were left floating in the foot area and compressed by the skin, but I usually put a peg in this area to make the frame look prettier while I’m building it.
.
Once the frame is complete it’s just a matter of cleaning up all the sharp edges with edge tools and sandpaper in preparation for oiling the frame.
