The reality of teaching online boat building courses in a partially natural light studio on a partly cloudy day:
“Hey guys Brian Schulz here with Cape Falcon Kayak with an update to the rib shaping….seriously?! hey Liz does it look like we have another sun patch after that cloud? No? OK let’s bring up the hot light to 100% and bounce it off the wall. That should pick up a little bit of warmth off the floor to keep us in sort of the same tonal range as what’s still coming in the window. I’ll go grab that warm filter for the fill light and we can just leave the hair light at 4800.”
5 min later: “ hey guys Brian Schulz here with cape falcon…..gah, I could’ve swore that was a light cloud. OK pull the filter off the fill light, tilt the hot light up and towards the white curtain, i’m just gonna climb up here and turn the hair light down to 5500. How does that look? Too contrasty? Let’s bump the exposure to 800 and I’ll drop the lights by 30%.”
5 minutes later: “ hey guys Brian Schulz here with Cate falcon kayak with an update to the rib shaping process for our skin on frame canoe building…..f***! Ok, stay calm Brian, It looks like I can get about 10 minutes out of this sun patch. Let’s put the warm filter back on the fill light and pull it in close, drop the exposure to 200, I’ll drop the hair light back down to 4500, turn it up to 100% and let’s just tip the hot light back and down towards the floor again to pick up some of that color.”
5 minutes later: “ Hey guys Brian Schulz with Cape falcon kayak with an update to the ribs shipping process…. I just said shipping didn’t I? (Facepalm) Hey guys Brian Schulz here with Cape falcon kayak with an update, aaaaand there goes the battery on the hair light, Hey Liz can you hand me another battery, ok cool, aaand there goes the sun… well at least I’m standing up here so I can dial up the color temp again. Can you do me a favor and switch the warm filter out on the fill light again? I’ll turn the hot light back down. How are we doing on the Mic battery?”
Welcome to video instruction hell. The finished product is gorgeous but at what cost?…
