Well today started out ok…

Well today started out ok. I went to my buddies garage to pick up all the shiny bits and was heading home to rig the canoe when I thought: ‘you know, my dinghy plans won’t be here for another week, I could build the rig in the meantime, I already have some decent fir but I’ll just stop by the lumber store for a super quick look at their spruce.’
.
Twenty minutes later: ‘this board is all I need but one edge is slightly crushed and the grain is almost too tight, I think it will be a bit too heavy. But wait this piece here is just incredible, I could make 4 oars out of it. Focus Brian, we didn’t come here for oar wood. Ok, how about THIS Perfect stick? Yeah but it’s three feet too long, and cutting 13’ clear Sitka down to 10’ is a criminal act. Yeah but it’s only twenty bucks more, maybe I could just buy it and keep it for when I need a 13 foot mast. Well, yeah but if you’re going 13 feet I’m going hollow box anyway so why bother with spruce fir is fine. Fair but I could use the offcuts to make blades for those oar shafts from the other miracle stick. Right but in that case you should just buy a few shorter sticks and leave the 13 foot clear length for someone else. Are you mad? When was the last time you saw a board like that, it’s a full 1/4 oversized, that’s like getting two board feet for free! Hell, you could plane it to 2 1/8 and I’ll bet you could hang 60 feet of canvas off it before it even thought about breaking. Right but I know you, you’ll never be able to cut it to ten feet, also, isn’t this just a bit frivolous? It’s a goddamn dinghy, you could just go buy a relatively clear SPF 4x6 for a fraction of the cost, and cut around the knots. You’d never even notice the difference. Also, didn’t you just haul a bunch of wood home for making spars? I did but dude, I can’t walk away from a 100% clear CVG oversized Sitka 2x6x13’? How about this, let’s make a deal, we’ll buy it, and the other board for oars but won’t use any of it until the spar stock I have is used up.....’.

Two hours later I drove home with both sticks. So yeah, that’s what I did today...
