Video: A few clips of canoe catamaran sailing last summer

Sailing a skin on frame canoe catamaran
Just a few clips of Canoe Catamaran sailing the nesting canoes from a YouTube video I’m working on right now.

The Canoe Catamaran functionality is built into our system from the ground up, meaning that it’s integrated and standard and not just an afterthought.

The sail rig weighs 2-3 pounds (carbon vs aluminum), takes about 40 seconds to rig and about five seconds to pop up on the water, and then folds down into the bottom of the boat where it can be clipped out-of-the-way with a bungee.

This is the less stiff of our two catamaran systems although it’s a lot easier to build and set up. It takes about two minutes to rig the catamaran boards and it can be done on the water. We’ve also used these same catamaran boards to run mild white water (class 1-2) on wilderness river trips.

None of this is ‘high performance’ but it is inexpensive, easy to build, and simple to use, which generally that translates into a small boat that is actually gets used!

I have to say though that 7 mph in 15 mph gusts on a downwind course with less than 3 1/2 total meters of canvas, ain’t bad! Especially considering that one of the canoes is 13’8” long.

You can find plans and video courses for how to build these here.
