Doing things a little differently in the shop this week… When Tillamook dairy approached us for a kayak to install in their new visitor center, there was one challenge: the boat needed to match their brand (and their cheese). Normally we skin with dyed nylon coated in polyurethane, but to get such a precise color match we’re using a polyester painted with an oil-based enamel on this F1. This particular boat won’t be used on the water, but this is a skin and finish combo used by other builders.
The cheese-yak heads out tomorrow to get some graphics added, then back to the shop for decklines and then down to Tillamook for installation. I have to say the paint makes a nice finish, it would be interesting to see how this paddles.

And here is the “cheese boat” rigged and ready to send to the new Tillamook Creamery visitor center. This was a cool project to work on – both as an exploration of new materials and finishes in order to get the color match they needed, and in the fact that the Tillamook folks made a point of finding a local craftsperson for this piece. I’m in Portland now, but I spent years living on the Oregon coast, and the F1 was designed there specifically for performance in our coastal waters. It’ll be cool to have this one installed in the main visitor stop on the coast.
