Hit the sound button, I really like the song on this one.
Standing 200 feet above the water the beautiful St. John’s Bridge in North Portland makes a convenient poor man’s drone. Kudos to Liz, whose hands move like cold molasses even on a vibrating bridge platform with cars zooming past! This 300mm footage has no crop at all.
Part of a larger upcoming project, in this video I demonstrate a variety of edge turns in the F1, each of which steals more boat speed than the last. The first one is just edging the boat with no paddle input, and what’s interesting is that subsequent turns really don’t add much turning, they just slow the kayak down. The last isn’t a true edge turn because it’s leaning into the turn and basically just dragging the kayak to a stop.
The truth is I rarely turn with any of these methods, generally I just edge and then keep paddling normally and the boat comes around smartly. The cool thing about the F1 is that it will turn like this even in strong winds, which makes it a very safe kayak in capable hands. With it’s surprisingly flat rocker, and efficient low wetted surface hull, the F1 still tracks nice and straight when paddled level.
