Fundraiser for the kids of Tiniteqilaaq, please read, like, and share:
In addition to my modern skin on frame work I’m also passionate about traditional arctic kayaks and supporting native builders. For the last three years I’ve been helping Max, the schoolmaster in the tiny East Greenland village of Tiniteqilaaq (also known as Tiilerilaaq) to revive their local kayak building tradition by sending them tools, supplies, paddling gear, and building information.
With a population of just 96, Tiniteqilaaq is so remote that they only receive one cargo ship per year and everything else must come by helicopter.
The children there have built four kayaks now and last year some of them traveled to the Greenland National Kayak championship, representing East Greenland for the first time EVER and even bringing home some medals.
This year they are hoping to return to the kayak championships in West Greenland and to bring the oldest hunter from their village who remembers hunting from skin covered kayaks.
Due to the extremely high cost of traveling from East to Northwest Greenland. (literally as expensive as traveling from North America to Greenland) we have decided to start a fundraiser to help with the $20,000 their group will need for travel and accommodations. We are collecting the funds because GoFundMe can’t be linked directly to a Greenland bank account, but donations will be transferred to Tsaqqi Peqatigiiffiq (East Greenland kayak club) and any money collected in excess of the goal will go towards future travel and kayaking activities.
To show our commitment I personally made the first donation of $500 and I’m hoping you can help out as well. Living in a place where they‘ve only ever seen a handful of other people, the ability to travel and meet other Greenlanders will make a huge difference in the lives of these kids.
With 40,000 followers it shouldn’t be hard to raise this money, let’s do this! You can find the fundraiser on GoFundMe here. Please like and share this post! Thank you!
