John’s solo canoe

skin on frame Cape Falcon 66 canoe
I want to share this lovely example of our canoe building system, built by John in Virginia.

The canoe is 14‘10“ long, and 30” wide, 12.5” deep, with 2” of rocker, and 2” of tumblehome. John is 180 pounds which is about as heavy as I would go before making the canoe 5 inches longer.

He hasn’t had a chance to weigh it yet but with the gunnels and stringers built out of yellow pine I would expect that it’s somewhere around 37 pounds. (Cedar would be 31)

He built it slowly over the summer but he estimates that it took about 8-10 days of actual work to complete.

His secret for getting such a nice shape? really good bending oak.

Good bending stock makes all the difference with these boats. Although the cost can be a bit of a kick in the trousers if you have to order it, it’s still ends up being a lot cheaper than building a plywood canoe mold. Fortunately John had a friend who was cutting up a nice oak oak log.

Excellent work sir. Hopefully I can get more pictures of this on the water in the future.
