I did a ton of experimentation on this canoe in an effort to aggressively push the building system and the solo design evolution forward. This canoe is deeper, fuller, and more asymmetrical than I’ve attempted in the past. Both the trim and the seat location are significantly aft of previous models. The biggest development is that I was able to successfully add 2 inches of tumble home into the shape without breaking the boat or making it too tippy. (I started building it 30 inches wide and ended at 28 at the gunwales).
With the exception of the 7% extra depth all of these modifications were successful. Mistakes I made were accidentally laminating the gunwales into an inch too shallow sheer, which might actually improve performance but doesn’t look great. I also screwed up the rocker with an experiment I was doing, but learned something in the process that will allow me to precisely dial-in all future rockers, so it was worth it.
So the next steps are to proof the upgrades with a brand new set of canoes of totally different sizes, and then start adding all that information to our video courses. I’ve already added a bunch of preliminary information in the Updates, and Canoe Examples pages in the video course, and Liz is working on a major plan revision right now.
Hopefully we can film a YouTube video about this canoe today or tomorrow and then I can start on the next canoes.
I’ll share paddling details and videos in the next post, but for now I’ll just say that I’m pretty happy.
