With my phone mounted on the front deck I’m always trying to make videos about kayaking while kayaking which is a great idea in theory but doesn’t usually work because my brain function sucks so much from the chronic illness that I just can’t speak on demand like I used to!
Here’s a short clip of me narrating the function of the flip down skeg while sailing. (Don’t try to listen to the audio is terrible) I have this terrible habit of taking my hands off the paddle to gesture which is inevitably going to put me in the water.
At the end here you can see the effect that pulling up the stern mounted skeg has on the F1, the kayak immediately veers off and I know from experience that in strong winds it’s impossible to control this behavior. This is one of the only situations where my LPB is actually superior in challenging conditions.
So it was really nice to finally be able to cruise in an F1 the way I’ve always wanted to, the downside of course is that I’m inevitably going to break the rudder hanging off the back. This is actually the reason that I was toying with that thru-hull skeg a few boats ago, but after experiencing the horrendous drag from that contraption I’ve sworn off them forever.
Also there’s a lot of current here so you can take at least a mile per hour off that speedometer. It’s blowing about 10 gusting to 20.
