My latest cockpit arrangement for the new canoes

cockpit outfitting and flotation in a skin on frame canoe
Pictured above is my latest cockpit arrangement for the new canoes. 4 inch diameter pool noodles lashed to either side makes this canoe self dumping when turned on its side in a rescue scenario. The Thermarest RidgeRest pad becomes a $20 seat that can be folded or moved in lots of different configurations but won’t fall out of the boat because the pool noodles hold it in place. For longer crossings the Trak Kayaks combination float/gear bags that I use in my sea kayaks fit perfectly here as well. Finally, the seat back doubles as a portage yoke when mounted in the center or as a stiffening thwart when mounted forward. None of these ideas worked terribly well in their initial iterations, but with enough trial and error the systems are getting cleaner and more functional.
