Building a new kayak cockpit coaming bending jig


Nothing detracts from the joy of boat building like the work of running a small boat building business! The running joke here is that owning your own business gives you the freedom to work all the time.

This year we’re sinking our teeth into replacing the entire Cape Falcon video library to reflect our ever-improving filmmaking skills, which is probably insane considering that the courses are good already, but why settle for good when perfect is a mere twenty times harder?

The next three days we are building steam-bent cockpit coamings, which will end up replacing the existing video in our free kayak building prep course. I give about half of my video course content away for free because I want people to judge the content for themselves before making a purchase. It also just spreads goodwill and good information.

The importance of having a good bending jig almost can’t be overstated because when you’re pushing the outer limits of achievable bend radiuses, you need to be able to move swiftly and smoothly without fumbling or fussing with the jig. Little things like a perfect radius at the apex of the bend, or adding stops at key locations so you can let go and re-position your hands, can make a huge difference in the amount of time and aggravation involved in a coaming build.
