North Alaskan kayaks don’t have separate stem pieces so the ends of the keel are carved out of much larger pieces of wood to give the ends strength and shape. To replicate this I glued wood to the ends of the keel. The original builders would’ve had to start with something roughly the size of a 4 x 3 and then tapered it down to 1/2“ x 1“. The ends are shaped on the outside and deeply hollowed on the inside which was time consuming even with modern glue and power tools.
