A couple years ago I switched from Norton to Shapton stones because everyone said they were better but I’ve been regretting it ever since.
With the Norton Stones, the finer grits would dish out faster but even if you didn’t feel like flattening, you could always throw a quick edge on because if the next step in the sharpening process has a little more dish that’s actually helpful.
Fast forward to the Shaptons, the course grits actually dish our faster than the finer grits which means that if you don’t feel like flattening your course stone often, once you get to the finer grit, you have to do a ton of work to get the edge sharp all the way across the bevel.
With my Nortons, I could throw a quick edge on in about three minutes and I would flatten about once a year, but with the Shaptons because of that specific issue, I’m flattening once a month and it takes me about twice that long to put an edge on.
Everyone seems to rave about the Shaptons, so I’m just wondering if anybody else has noticed the specific issue.
