Just a quick video of our pop up sail rig.
The rig tucks tightly out of the way and doesn’t interfere with normal paddling until you’re ready to deploy it. One hand pops a ball bungee, then a quick tug on the halyard with the other and you’re ready to sail. The sheet can be held by hand or cleated off in an open micro clam cleat so you can focus on steering with either weight shift or a canoe paddle. An important feature here is that the open clam cleats are inside of the arm radius of the paddler so if things get too hectic just a quick swipe will pop the sheet if the rig is becoming overpowered.
The whole thing goes up and down in less than a minute and that includes coiling and tucking the sheet so it doesn’t become an entanglement hazard.
I really like my new carbon fiber masts. At $75 apiece they are twice the price of anodized aluminum but the weight is really nice. I also like the ripstop nylon as opposed to the normal heavier Dacron I’ve been using. If both prove to be durable after a season of use I will probably start recommending them in the plans.
