Row/sail canoe for sale (UPDATE: SOLD)
I build a LOT of prototypes when I’m working out new designs, which means I can’t get sentimental about hanging onto things. This latest little row/sail canoe was an exploration in building something of roughly Adirondack guideboat proportions using my canoe building system and adding a little sail to see how it would work. The idea was a relatively light rowboat that’s easier to make than a guideboat, with a bit more stability. Something two people and camping gear would fit in. Having built both guideboats and this, I can say this is definitely less sexy, but not hugely different behind the oars. You can switch rowers without tipping over which is nice. Made to accommodate flotation and is fully self rescuable.
As far as the sailing goes, I’m sorta biased in that I never really love putting all the complexity of sail into a small space, it just gets frustrating. I feel like a boat like this is at its best with a small boomless sprit sail you pop up when the wind is in your favor and steer with a paddle or oar. It will sail harder and point higher with a leeboard bracket and rudder, but that’s a lot to bother with IMO.
Anyway, this little rowboat needs a home. The boat is 15’6” long x 39” wide x 14” deep. It weighs 60lbs and has an extra heavy skin that I would guarantee against submerged barbed wire (speaking from experience). Good little boat for a dog, kids, romantic evening rows, camping, etc. Comes with a mast, and Sitka spruce/ash tipped oars. I’d like to suggest a different sail rig than what I was using but if you want the existing rig we can talk.
Cost is $1400 cash. In contrast, when something like this finally becomes a finished design it will be 7 pounds lighter, and cost $5000
I plan to get back to this concept but I’ve got to focus on regular canoes for a while. The only real flaw in the boat is a very slight dip in the keel line from the super heavy skin tightening onto the frame. Gonna put this up on Instagram first and then send to the rest of my list.
