At boat number 17 feel like I’m just starting to get a toehold into understanding this whole canoe thing. It’s definitely intimidating heading into a whole new branch of boat design, taking the time to understand what shaping choices result in what performance features. The important thing is to stay humble and not look at your own work through rose colored glasses.
One of the things that I love the most about building in skin-on-frame is that I can make instantaneous changes to my shaping without having to go back and re-design all of my molds and that flexibility combined feedback from students had always been a potent driver of design evolution.
I like watching all the little building tricks that start to naturally emerge. Today it was realizing that a concrete block place to temporarily across the center of the canoe untwisted the intermediate points making the frustrating task of marking and screwing those spreaders much easier. It also gives me a perfect place to set my drills and screws!
