Don’t bother with the sound on this one, you can’t hear anything but the wind! Liz’s and I went on a preliminary scouting mission yesterday in the Columbia River Gorge Looking for places that we can film rough water canoe self rescue and high wind canoe sailing. Before the sailing shenanigans can begin though I have to figure out if my self rescue is going to work in these conditions. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find a location where I could get into the fully developed big breaking wind waves and still get blown back to shore if the rescue failed.
I think what I’m going to need to do to figure this part of canoe rescue out is find a couple of competent rough water kayakers to run safety. For health reasons I haven’t done much rough water kayaking in the last decade and most of my old friends have moved on, passed on, or drifted away, so I’m gonna have to find some fresh blood to help me push this to the next level.
The idea here is never to deliberately go canoe sailing in winds over 20 mph but my personal rule with small boat safety is to never paddle or sail in any conditions where are you couldn’t get out of those conditions if the wind speed suddenly doubled.
So anyway you live around here and you’re comfortable in a kayak in 30 mph winds and big breaking wind waves and you feel like hanging out with me while I try some ridiculous things in a canoe send me a message!
