The deck line and toggle arrangements on traditional Greenland hunting kayaks have always fascinated me. A quick page through Harvey Golden’s book, Kayaks of Greenland reveals a vast array of potential setups from the most basic bare straps to elaborate and sometimes ornate beads and toggles.
The deck arrangement on this East Greenland Kayak replica falls somewhere in the middle. The original toggles would have been ivory which interestingly machines a lot like the HDPE plastic that I use on my kayaks. I’ve used bone in the past but it’s just not very durable, which is probably why it wasn’t used much on traditional kayaks either.
Strap and toggle systems are a revelation if you’re coming from the world of bungees. You can lock a spare paddle on deck and it will still be there after getting pounded heading out through the surf. Leather straps are also great for holding the paddle for use as a stabilizer while you dig around in the cockpit. I use English Bridle Leather which is super expensive but lasts a long time.
