We’re sharing some of our favorite skin-on-frame photos from the last 15 years while we build the tiny house. (Check out @actuallytiny).
When I first started building boats I went to visit a local cabinet maker named Robert who had built an entire sailboat in his backyard. I thought he would be a good person to ask about steam bending wood but his response was pretty unsatisfactory: “you just gotta get in there and break some wood.”
At the time I felt like he just didn’t want to take time to talk to me but much later I understood that this simple answer is probably the best one. Granted it really helps to start with clear straight grained wood of a species that will actually steam bend and have some idea of how long that might take but in the end it just all comes down to feel.
Teaching for 15 years I found that people were usually a lot better at it than they thought they would be. My job was just to keep their hands moving so they didn’t pause and fuss too much and waste time. Sometimes I wish I had someone to do that for me!
