Video: Steam bending the double lips onto kayak cockpit coamings

Steam bending the double lips onto kayak cockpit coamings with a little help from @wessinger_woodworks .
.
As a former solo coastal sea kayaker where every single launch was a surf launch, I take my cockpit coamings extremely seriously. The shape here is long enough that I can lift my legs in and out while seated, just barely wide enough to lift my knees for a good stretch on those longer paddles, but still narrow enough for rock solid knee purchase for rolling and rough water. The double lip won’t let go of a spray skirt even if you get bombed by a set wave in the surf, and will also hold a sea sock.
.
Basically it’s everything that every other good cockpit coaming is, but is often neglected in skin on frame.
.
I’m so passionate about these specific coamings that last year I made a minicourse on my website showing the techniques that I use to build them. Honestly, this works against me from a business perspective, but I think it’s worth giving away some secrets to make our branch of the sport a bit safer.
