With Liz working on the plans for the recent kayak design updates, I’m switching gears to focus on canoes. Every year I try to update one of my building courses with the latest modifications and building techniques. This year it’s time for the Skin-on-Frame Canoe Building Course to get some fresh updates.
My original plan was to start with a tandem to showcase the success we’ve had lately building tandems with our system. But then I got an email from a gentleman who was wondering if it would be possible to put a Pedal Drive in one of my canoes due to a back injury that makes it hard for him to keep up with his kayaking buddies. Considering I am literally in the exact same position right now (there’s a reason you haven’t seen me in a kayak for a while) I thought ‘heck, let’s give it a try.’ So I switched my prototype plan from a tandem to a solo and bought a couple different pedal drives to experiment with, and we’ll see what happens from there…
This is probably gonna be a relatively slow build because I’m going to be filming a bunch of new course updates but I’m gonna try to get through it as quick as I can because I’m really excited to see if I can make the pedal drive work. It would be really nice to be on the water again.
Here I am working through the work sheets in our plan set, (something unique about our system is that it lets you build any size canoe) and doing the layout and prep on the gunwales. This is my first time laminating with Titebond III, I put a ton of it on there, but I still didn’t get as much squeeze out as I would like to see. We’ll see how it looks when I slice it open tomorrow!
