Test ribbing number one, with white oak and stringers

A prototype skin on frame canoe with ribs and stringers installed

Test ribbing number one, with white oak, and stringers clamped in place. This boat was disassembled and ribbed a second time with carbonized bamboo, and will ultimately be disassembled entirely to make some design changes to the gunwales. This is what’s so great about skin on frame – it allows for rapid prototyping when designing a new boat. Here, our goals were both testing shaping, but also looking at the balance of tensions between the gunwales and ribs, and how the shape alters when that middle spreader is removed.
