The perfect board

One of the worst things that you can have in any woodshop is a perfect board. Having bought it in a fit of lust it then sits for years in the corner stoically taunting you with its perfectly straight clear grain that is simply too perfect for any project you happen to be working on at the time.
.
So it was that yesterday I finally said “To hell with you 5’2” x 12” piece of 4/4 CVG Alaskan yellow cedar!” And I chopped it up to make catamaran boards for the new canoe set.
.
These are actually shorter than I want, stronger than I need, and heavier than is neccesary, but at least I don’t have to look at that damn board anymore.
.
I look forward to savoring my revenge every time we head out to enjoy the floating party that is the Cape Falcon Canoe Catamaran.
.
Surprisingly, this system works really well. It’s reasonably stiff but still allows for enough flex that the system doesn’t tear itself apart in waves or rapids. I would have put money on that not being the case so this is one of my wacky ideas that I’m glad I took a chance on.
