To finish out what has been a bit of an unofficial Greenland rolling week here, I want to re-post the fundraiser for my friends in East Greenland.
For the last 3 years I’ve been working with the schoolmaster in the tiny East Greenlandic village of Tiniteqilaaq, helping them to get kayak building supplies and information to revive the local kayak building tradition.
Last year Max and his students traveled to participate in the Greenland National Kayaking Championships in West Greenland, representing East Greenland for the first time ever!
This year they are hoping to return to the championships, bringing with them an older hunter from their village who remembers hunting from skin covered kayaks.
Unfortunately Tiniteqilaaq is extremely remote which makes travel costs very high. It literally costs as much to travel from Tiniteqilaaq to the location of next year‘s kayak championships as it does to travel from North America to Greenland.
Tiniteqilaaq is so isolated that they only get one cargo ship every year and everything else has to come by helicopter. With just 96 people in their village, the ability to travel to the kayak championship is so much more than just a chance to compete, it’s an opportunity to experience Greenlandic culture and interact with other children.
To bring the kids and the elder kayak hunter they will need $20,000 so I have started a fundraiser try to help them with the costs. I made the first donation of $500 and if you didn’t donate the first time I posted this consider giving this time. The nice thing about having 40,000 followers is that we could easily reach this goal with smaller donations!
You can find the fundraiser here on GoFundMe. On the fundraiser page there’s lots more pictures and Max tells the story of their kayak revival in his own words.
Please like, share, and consider making a donation. Thank you!
