I’m starting to get some trip reports back from people taking the latest generation of full-size canoes on trips. This one just finished a week in the boundary waters. It is 14‘8“ long, and 29” wide and was piloted by a larger person with gear. It was probably a little undersized but still manageable.
Stability was described as moderate, with initial instability but reasonable hardness when leaned. Portages were a single trip carrying canoe and gear (about 4 miles total), and despite and abundance of commentary about the fragile appearance from others, there were no issues hitting submerged objects and dragging over beaver dams. This won’t surprise anyone who has actually used a skin boat but the perception is still common.
If you have built one of my boats please send me pictures and trip reports. Every report helps to improve the canoe designs!
