Can anyone tell me what animal is making this noise?
Last week while we were filming at a remote mountain lake in southern Washington state, I was out on the lake fishing before sunrise when I heard what almost sounded like metal clanking echoing off the cliffs.
It reminded me of the sound of setting up heavy logging equipment or maybe somebody hooking up a trailer hitch. In retrospect that makes no sense because there were no other people or machine noises.
When I got back to the other end of the lake where we were camped, Liz said she had heard a loud “chuffing sound” coming from nearby.
I didn’t think to connect the two noises until I was reviewing my video clips and she said: “That’s it, that’s the noise I heard, but there was no echo where I was and it sounded more like an animal and it sounded BIG.”
So obviously I’m not terribly useful at identifying animal sounds, but maybe somebody here can you tell me what the heck this is? Is that a bear noise?
