Acid dye color test results

The results are finally in from the color test we’ve been working on since the beginning of the year.
.
We made two color palettes, one with acid dye and the other one with rare earth pigment, and exposed them to summer sunlight for 100 days to quantify the effects of UV exposure on each coloring system.
.
This project was a big time investment (including the video we just made we both spent about seven days on this project) but it’s just something that I’ve always wanted to do both for myself and to help my students target their color choices as accurately as possible. Color doesn’t affect the function of a boat, but it’s always such a bummer when you work so hard on something only to end up with a color you don’t like.
.
Each coloring system has big advantages and big disadvantages so we just uploaded a super comprehensive video on the subject to our YouTube channel and I’m also going to put it in both of our skin boat building courses this afternoon.
.
As a result of these tests we have dropped some of our former colors, reformulated some of our colors, and added new colors. If you want to see close up images of each acid dye color before and after UV exposure, you can find that on the color page on our website. (capefalconkayaks.com/choosing-a-color) We’ve included the recipes we use to make our custom colors, that way even if you don’t want to buy them premixed from us, you can buy the base colors elsewhere and mix them yourself!
