Day 1, 16ft tandem tripping canoe. Build time: 7hrs.
While I’m deciding what I think of the row/sail canoe, I thought I’d take the week to build a straightforward Prospector-style tripping canoe. 16 feet long, 35 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep. 2 inch progressive rocker, 8 inch sheer, shallow arch hull shape, little bit of tumblehome.
Despite the very clear ‘experimental’ status of using my pack canoe building system for bigger canoes, a lot of people are diving into full size canoe builds using my plans and videos so I wanted to get out ahead of the pack and solidify my choices on sizing, scantlings, stem shape, seat position etc. I’m not much of a canoeist so I’m not sure I’ll be much help in determining whether it’s a good boat or not, but I can at least get the structural aspect of the package dialed in.
If you live near Portland and you are a serious experienced canoeist, please come borrow this and give me your impressions. Should be done in about a week.
