Day 2, Skin-on-frame tandem canoe

Day 2) Skin-on-frame tandem canoe. 6 hrs.
.
I sometimes think that the hardest part of working out a boat design is deciding on a stem shape. At some point you just have to commit because it’s impossible to get it right your first time. I’m working a bit of recurve into this latest boat for purely aesthetic reasons.
.
Planed down a flatsawn yellow cedar 1x12 that I got for free because it was full of big knots. After making a stem template I was able to maneuver around the knots giving me a board that is actually better for the application than a nice clear piece. Free is a good price.
.
Still annoyed with the unnecessary weight of the Douglas fir here but cedar is too light. It’s ironic that the one thing I can’t get here is the one thing everyone else can, clear white pine. At least when I’m done I’ll know what the canoe weighs in yellow cedar or cypress!
.
Fed ‘the beast’ some oak and sliced it up on the table saw, then cut all the ribs to length for tomorrow mornings steam bending.
