How significant is slot drag from a skeg box or daggerboard trunk?
In the first video clip my drop skeg box is uncovered but the skeg is not deployed, and I’m really cranking to stay on top of this tiny boat wake.
In the second video clip I’ve put a strip of tape over the skeg slot and I can’t even ride a similarly sized wake because I just keep sliding out in front of it barely paddling at all.
The difference in drag from the skeg slot is like night and day, especially at higher rates of speed. I’m not saying that skegs aren’t useful in certain conditions, but if I’m not in those conditions I’m keeping mine covered!
