Here’s a couple nice pictures of the same size canoe that Kevin is building right now. Our system lets you build any size boat you want, but this is one of my favorites because of how versatile it is.
At 13‘9” long, it has enough waterline length to hold decent speed but also a fairly low wetted surface for easy padding. Clear 14 foot lumber is also a lot easier to find and then clear 16 foot lumber!
28 1/2 inches wide is big enough for a smaller person to use as a solo canoe with a higher seat, a medium size person to use as a minimalist single blade canoe or a kayak, and a large person sitting lower can use it like a kayak.
10 1/2 inches deep is just barely deep enough for single blading, but still shallow enough to allow elbow clearance for kayak style paddling.
In red cedar and white oak it ends up weighing about 26 pounds, which is just barely light enough for serious hike in canoeing, but the 9 ounce nylon saturated with two-part polyurethane can still take a reasonable amount of abuse.
It takes about 35 to 50 hours to knock one out and last year it was costing me about 350 in materials to build one of these although this year I’m sure that’s more like 450, which still ain’t bad.
The wooden back rest is removable so you can nest these like Russian dolls, and a matching loop upfront lets you catamaran two of them together.
Personally my go to solo canoe is a little deeper because I have a fleet of kayaks for kayak-style paddling, but I love this thing as a toss it in the back of your pickup and head out for a couple hours to catch a couple fish kind of boat. (the photos at the end are from a Florida fly fisherman who built exactly this boat last year).
I often recommend this as a first build for people wanting to tackle bigger canoe projects (like a couple tandems) Knocking out one of these little guys is an easy way to get familiar with the system and it’s just a darn handy little boat to have kicking around.
