Congratulations to Peter and Mindy who just finished a 16’3” x 34“ wide tandem built with our system. (This started 36 inches wide, but they pulled in 2 inches of tumble home at the end of the build.)
This is basically the same boat that Jake and Monty just used on the Appalachian Canoe Trail, and it’s been getting high marks from other builders as well. This makes me really happy because when I designed our canoe system, it was never intended to be expanded up into full-size tandems. Around 25 of these have been built at this point and so far the owners are pretty happy with them!
Peter was one of those rare cases of someone who followed our instructions too well and got such good bending oak and did such a great job on the bending that the bottom ended up a little bit flat. Not a big deal though because that just gives opportunity to pull in even more tumblehome than normal without rounding out the bottom and making the boat tippy! In the photos, you can see the transformation from a set of wonky test ribs to a very symmetrical hull shape—this is the magic of our system, as long as you follow the recommended procedures, the tension and all the wobbly ribs will cancel itself out, and the boat ends up nice and fair. Nice work guys!
