Mocking up a birdsmouth mast

I’ve always been intimidated by the prospect of building a birdsmouth mast, but with spruce hitting $17 a board foot, construction lumber, epoxy, and a bit of extra work is starting to look appealing. I built this mock up on my table saw in about 10 minutes and it really wasn’t that bad! Still, this is a long way from a completed mast.
.
Right now, my plan is to build a octagon plug for the mast head and the partners location and of course the step, then Make a series of plywood supports to hold the mast straight during the glue up. And then I guess just mix up a bunch of slow cure epoxy with some thicker and squirted into each one of the V notches and then squish everything together and hope for the best? If anyone has any suggestions, I am very open to hearing them! Mast is 10 feet long and 3 inch diameter at the partners.
