While I wait for the oil on the row-canoe to dry, I wanted to share the first full-size double canoe frame to be built with the new canoe building system. This frame was built by Richard in Maryland. It’s 16 feet long 32 inches wide, 12.5 inches deep. This was intended as a fast day cruiser rather than a heavy load tripper. Richard decided to modify the stem shape which I think looks really good. The boat has 1 inch of tumble home, 7 inches of sheer and 2 inches of rocker. I liked the integrated handles that he added at the ends so much that I immediately incorporated them into the row-canoe. I will add it to the plans and videos within a week. This ability to rapidly evolve designs based on feedback is one of big advantages of working in skin on frame. It seems like almost every person who builds a boat has something valuable that I can add to the system.
The pack canoes are solid, but I’m still holding my breath on using this system to build full-size canoes, waiting for builder reports to see how they actually paddle! As always plans and videos are free for anyone who is willing to tackle a new variation to help me evolve my designs! Details in the free part of the canoe building course on my website.
