I’ve been trying to do more filming with the GoPro lately, playing around with solo filming and trying to get more interesting shots. It’s cool to bring people along from my point of view. I bought the GoPro Hero 7 Black as a dedicated time lapse camera for a non-boat related project a few...

Video: Instagram vs real life
I’m frequently envious of how my own life looks on social media. Building beautiful boats and paddling them in stunning locations, man that’s the life! The reality of course is that building and paddling is only a small part of the job. I think we each lost a pint of blood last weekend to mosquitoes....

Don’t bother with the sound on this one, you can’t hear anything but the wind! Liz’s and I went on a preliminary scouting mission yesterday in the Columbia River Gorge Looking for places that we can film rough water canoe self rescue and high wind canoe sailing. Before the sailing shenanigans can begin though...

We took advantage of a sunny winter day to switch out the roof on the kayak storage fence. The first version had 2’ x 2’ panels of corrugated galvanized roofing but they didn’t give quite enough protection from the sun and the rain and created a blinding glare at certain times of the year....

Aaaagh. The problem with having once been an expert at something is that you don’t always notice when you’re losing your edge. If you remember, (and I hope that you don’t because nobody should be that concerned with anything I’m doing), late last summer I set aside an East Greenland kayak build because I...

Just messing around with some new studio lights. I’m sure there’s a lot more I could do with this concept if I had a bigger room and wasn’t so lazy....
Keeping a clean shop
In my classes I strongly encourage people to keep a clean shop. This reduces errors, speeds up the workflow, and just makes for an overall more enjoyable boat building experience. I am clearly setting an excellent example with my own shop....

Video: Reshooting the rib bending videos for the kayak building course
Reshooting the rib bending videos for the kayak building course today. I think I was actually better at teaching this five years ago when I was on the tail end of 15 years of building these year-round with students. A dedicated video studio is really nice for good sound and clear camera angles though,...

I haven’t been posting to Instagram much lately, just fighting the battle against the metabolic illness that I live with and unfortunately not winning. Sometimes it takes me a whole day now to teach a simple 10 minute woodworking task. The physical side of having a metabolic disease, (not actually being able to use...

I like to joke that Liz is the brains AND the muscle behind Cape Falcon Kayak. Beyond her miraculous ability turn my nearly illegible scribblings into professional looking boat plans, and make me look slightly less dumb on camera, she often steps up to do the hardest physical work that I can’t due to...

…and we’re back to the not fun part of the job, making YouTube videos. Today I am talking about all of the new modifications and design updates in the latest canoes. Unlike Instagram where I can just throw up whatever I’m working on that day with a few paragraphs of text, explaining all of...

‘No wind but somehow still sailing’ feels like a pretty apt description of my life right now. Things are tough these days, while I watch the world deal with Covid, I’ve been fighting my own battles against a devastating chronic illness that’s been slowly tearing me apart for the last 20 years. Having a...

Woke up at 5 o’clock in the morning to finish the frame and put some oil on it before the morning sun made it impossible to film. The weird thing about film compared to photography is that you can’t change the shutter speed so to get these shots we started at 5:15 with the...
